English: Fragment from a cast copper alloy pedestal / pendant seal matrix of probable later medieval date (1350-1500). The die is an uneven hexagon in plan and measures 15.7mm length and 14.6mm width. The reverse of the die would have risen to a hexagonal pedestal formed from six tapering sides most likely terminating in a loop. However, the pedestal is broken at the junction with the die and the fragment is 6.3mm thick. The seal matrix weighs 2.55 grams.

The die is well cut and the inscription is arranged along each of the six external sides. However, much of this inscription has been lost due to a combination of both corrosion and abrasion in the plough soil. At the centre of the seal die is a stylised heraldic device of a lion, rampant (in that it is shown standing on its rear legs with its paws extended to the front. The lion is depicted in the die facing right – but on the impression of the seal would have faced left. This central design is enclosed within a hexagonal border which separates the lion from the inscription. Around the edge of the die is an inscription, each face of the hexagon has three letter inscribed upon it. Much of the inscription has been extensively damaged by abrasion and is difficult to interpret. It is most likely to read: * S[??] / SA[N?] / [?] DA / [N?]R / [PN]S / [???]. Due to the fragmentary nature of the inscription a good translation cannot be provided.

The matrix is of a mid grey green colour with an even but abraded patina. There are also areas of light green active powdery corrosion present - mostly on the body of the seal. The edge of the die has suffered greatly from abrasion and chipping caused by movement in the plough soil. From the seal matrixes size, inscription and the image it depicts, it was most likely to represent a private personal seal – which would have had either a private motto or name and village of the owner. This type of seal is dated to the late fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, 1350-1500, due to the shape and style of the pedestal.
